Firstly, and very importantly, this year we journied back to Shensi with a very important addition to our family – the gorgeously beautiful Pip. She spent a few days nervously jumping on and off the boat (after all, there was a gap of about 2″ between the boat and land), but very quickly adapted and then, together with Casper, she became a true ship’s dog.

PIP is taking over

Now comes the boring part …..

The 2022 season was somewhat different to any we have encountered so far, in that our beloved Shensi had to spend quite some time in a boatyard (SRF in Harlingen, NL) having the hull cleaned and re-painted along with various other jobs we had decided on over the previous year. Despite our anticipated two-ish weeks in the yard, we ended up living on board in the boat yard – sometimes in a shed, sometimes outside in the yard itself – for a total of seven weeks! And although we didn’t end up paying any mooring fees during that time, we did end up paying what-felt-like an exorbitant amount for all the works, when we finally were put back into the water Shensi looked and felt so much better than when we had arrived.

Over the year we had a few visitors once again – Lucy was our first of the year, but sadly for her she arrived whilst we were in the boatyard, so ended up living onboard but out of the water. She was followed a few weeks later by Amy, arriving from South America (as part of her year’s travelling), who stayed with us through part of Netherlands and into Germany before heading off again, this time to Vietnam. Her friend, Paul, also joined her/us at Hanover for a few days. And our last visitors for the rest of the year were Bob and Jane throughout September til mid-October when we all traveled from Hanover, Germany back into Netherlands, finally arriving back at Reitdiephaven to winterize our home and return together to the UK.

Our first day out of Reitdiephaven was on 3rd April 2022, and we continued travelling through Netherlands until 9th July, which equates to 27 weeks and 6 days / 195 days in Netherlands (with 49 of those days docked at SRF).

On 9th July we crossed the border into Germany where we cruised until 12th September, some 9 weeks and 2 day / 65 days in Germany

And finally on 12th September we crossed back into Netherlands, where we traveled for 4 weeks and 5 days / 33 days in Netherlands before returning to Reitdiephaven on 15th October 2022

A total time of 228 days was spent in Netherlands, and a total of 65 days in Germany – 293 days in all on European waterways in 2022.

At the start of the season our engine hours read 1059.20, and on our final day the read-out was 1398.50 – meaning that we had cruised for 339.30 engine hours.
