LaFoux Val D’Allos

Ski Apartment

Night view with balcony illuminated
Morning view from balcony

Our ski apartment is at the source of the river Verdon in the valley of Allos and is a two hour drive from Nice and similar from Marseilles.

It has the largest ski area in the southern French Alps combined with 144 miles of ski runs.
Due to development subsidies from the French government, it has some excellent facilities but is still very quiet.
Peak season will sometimes result in a 15 minute wait time on the main lifts but most lifts have very little queuing.
In the winter there is plenty of Skiing and Snowboarding and there are snow cannons on all the main runs when there is a lack of fresh snow.
Snow Cross country skiing, hiking trails, Ski-Doo hire, Ice skating and ice driving are also available.
Lots of good bars and restaurants.
In the summer the climate is a lot cooler.  Generally about 5 degrees cooler than further down the valley.
This makes it a lot more comfortable, especially on sunny days .
The scenery is also stunning in the winter.
In the summer, the Col D’Allos pass is open and allows you to explore the areas around Gap and Barcelonette.
There is Canyoning, White Water Rafting, Road Cycling, Mountain Biking, Hiking, Tennis, Archery, Horse riding and many more activities.
Just 5km away there is a water park, also used for the ice driving in the winter.

How to get there..

(La Foux D’Allos is located at the head of the valley Val D’Allos. )

Options to get there from the UK

Fly to Nice – Car Hire (2hr)

Driving from the airport

Take the D6202 to DIGNE

About 5Km on this road you will find Carrefour on the right if you want to stop for supplies.  Ensure your navigation takes you via St Andre Les Alpes. It will probably try to take you via Annot, a very twisty but pretty route that might need the use of snow chains and will certainly be more uncomfortable.

At St Andre Les Alpes, head up the valley on the D955/D908, through Colmar.  Colmar is quite interesting with its walled town.  On the south side of the village is the French Fort and to the north is the fort for what used to be the independent state of Savoy in the 17th century.

Even in heavy snow the roads are kept clear but it is worth taking snow chains/socks with you.  You can always get these from Carrefour and possibly return if not used.  In difficult conditions, drive with the gearbox to slow you down and only use the brakes gently and only in a straight line.  With that in mind, pay attention to the road signs and anticipate obstacles.  (Speed camera signs will always be followed by a camera in France.)

After passing through La Foux you will come to La Foux D’Allos.

Fly to NIce then take coach

Ski shuttles every Saturday, from Nice or Marseille airports to Val d’Allos, from mid-December until mid-April (3hrs). For information and booking

FLY to nice and take local train

Train from Nice to Thoram Gare and then shuttle bus to resort (3hrs total).  You can catch the local train from Chemins de Fer de Provence  to Thorame Haute Gare and then the connecting shuttle bus.

Take the 99 bus to get from Nice Airport to Gare de Nice Ville Train Station then walk two blocks to the Chemins de Fer de Provence station. The bus costs just €6 and is accessible from both T1 and T2. They run every 30 minutes during the following hours: 8AM to 9PM. Pay the driver on boarding and the ticket acts as a “Pass de Jour” for unlimited travel on local buses and the tram that day. You want to purchase a return ticket to La Foux d’Allos at the train station ( circa €33 return).  The train takes 2 hours and follows a very scenic route. It stops at Thoram Haute where there will be a mini bus waiting to transfer you to La Foux d’Allos.

Glorious all year round but here are some pics mid autumn and out of season. My favorite time because it is almost deserted.
